Leona Lewis – ‘Better In Time’/‘Footprints In The Sand’

We need to be nice about Leona’s new single, because it’s for charidee – Sport Relief, in fact – but in truth, it’s not hard to say pleasant things about it. For a start, there are Ms Lewis’s persistently impressive pipes, which carry off a bit of emotion on ‘Better In Time’ along with the usual technical box-ticking. The song also veers clear of schmaltz with a catchy chorus line and some crisp beats. ‘Footprints In The Sand’ lets the side down, mind, sounding like an overwrought Andrew Lloyd Webber cast-off. Ah, you can’t have everything – we’re still in Leona’s corner.

The Futureheads – ‘The Beginning Of The Twist’

The beginning of the Twist was those Chubby Checker records, wasn’t it? That’s what my mum told me. These Sunderland post-punkers tell a different story though, a somewhat oblique one about – possibly – losing your marbles. It’s one way of looking at it, I suppose. The Futureheads have lost their way a bit since a strong debut and an inspired cover of Kate Bush’s ‘Hounds Of Love’. ‘The Beginning…’ is entirely serviceable, with big guitar chords, urgent rocking-out and a fairly memorable chorus, but it’s desperately ordinary.
